New Build Gets Under Way!
Since The Hessle Federation converted to Academy status in 2010 we have been highly successful in securing capital maintenance grants from the Education Funding Agency (EFA) to support projects both at Penshurst Primary School where we have built a bespoke Nurture Unit for some of our most vulnerable children and at Hessle High School and Sixth Form College for replacing windows and doors (and the roof) in our Art Block.
However, in November 2012 we decided to follow our ambition for a new school and submitted a bid with the support of AA Projects to the Priority Schools Building Programme. Initially, the bid only focussed on a rebuild of the Heads Lane site as the programme focussed on a needs analysis of current buildings. However, after a meeting in early January 2013 with representatives from the EFA and the Department for Education (DfE), we were asked to submit a bid for the full school to be rebuilt. We were delighted, but a very busy 7 days were to follow. With the support of the Local Authority’s Building Team who conducted a very thorough Condition Survey in only 2 days, we managed to submit the bid in time.
In May 2013 we were delighted to learn that we had been successful (BBC website can be very informative!) but, none of us believed it until we received our confirmation in writing from the DFE.
In July 2013 we made our first contact with our Project Director from the EFA, Mr Paul Clegg. Paul and his team have provided a vast range of skills and expertise over the last year to ensure we deliver for our community a legacy that will provide an educational facility for the twenty first century and beyond.
Having been selected as the flagship school for the East Riding and Hull batch our full rebuild project begins on Monday 26 November 2014. The main school is due to be completed in January 2016 with the Sixth Form College coming on-line in May 2016.
As a school community we are delighted with the design and layout of the new building and are grateful to our Contractors Galliford Try and Architects, DLA architecture (especially Simon Evans and Kris Jones) for listening to our long wish list and designing something we can all be proud of.
We are all very excited about the next few months and actually seeing our new school take shape.
