Hessle Sixth Form College, A Level highlights:
- Overall 100% Pass Rate
- 30% of grades achieved were A* to A grades
- 66% of grades A*, A or B
- Outstanding results seen in History with 83% of grades achieving A* - B, 75% of grades in Maths A* - B and 67% of English Literature grades A* - B.
- 86% of grades achieved at Distinction or Distinction* in vocational courses
- Overall 72% of grades achieved at A*A or B (or equivalent) in vocational and academic subjects
Building on 2015’s success, Hessle Sixth Form students are celebrating today as they have stepped up to the challenge set by Sarah Young, Hessle Federation Executive Headteacher, and eclipsed last year’s record by producing the best ever A Level results in the history of the school.
Sarah Young, Executive Headteacher, commented “I am overjoyed at the results that Hessle Sixth Form College has achieved this year. It was a very tough challenge to beat last year’s record, however our students and staff have worked tirelessly and today’s results are a true reward for all their efforts. 2016 is the fifth consecutive year that we have demonstrated year on year improvement and we will strive to build on this again next year.
‘”I’m proud to say that this year has seen our students achieve an exceptional 100% pass rate across all subjects with 66% of grades awarded at A* - B grades. Including the outstanding vocational results, with a huge 86% achieving a Distinction/ Distinction* an overall 72% of grades achieved an A* - B or equivalent in vocational and academic subjects. Our A Level progress is significantly above the national average and our vocational progress is also much higher than what is being achieved nationally.”

Student Success Stories
Katie Marvin, Head Girl (aged 18)
“We are absolutely thrilled that Katie’s hard work has paid off and she has been accepted to Kings College London to study a War Studies degree. Katie as Head Girl has been a great asset to the Sixth form and has been very much involved in events and in planning the new Sixth Form facilities. We are very proud of her achievements. Congratulations Katie.’
Katie commented, ‘I’m so pleased with my results, I achieved an A in Business Studies, A in Geography and A in Politics and I’m so excited to be going to Kings College London. I’ll really miss being part of the Hessle Sixth Form community, I’ve got some great friends and the teachers have been extremely supportive, going above and beyond to help me throughout my studies. It’s a pity I won’t get to experience the new facilities as I’ve been involved in the planning but it’s good to know that next year’s Sixth Form students will get the benefit.”
Beth White (aged 18)
“Beth is another of our students that has made an incredible effort with her studies. This time last year her grades were suffering but with support she put in a lot of hard work and we are thrilled to see that it’s paid off and she’s got 3 As in Geography, English Language and Textiles. Well done Beth!”
In complete shock and through tears of joy, Beth commented, “Although I worked especially hard for my exams and I had lots of support from my teachers, especially Mr Carlin and Miss Vickers, I was still very nervous about my results today and certainly wasn’t expecting to get 3As. I’m now able to go onto Derby University to study Textiles. Hessle Sixth Form has been a fantastic experience and a great place to study. I couldn’t have achieved what I have without the support of my teachers.”
Simon McGuirk (aged 18)
“Simon has shown a great determination to succeed in his studies and his efforts have got him a place at Emmanuel College Cambridge to study a Classics degree. Fantastic effort Simon, congratulations! ”
Rightfully feeling happy, Simon commented, “I’m so pleased with my results, I was really nervous about getting the grades but I’ve achieved what I needed to. I’ll miss Hessle Sixth Form as I’ve had a lot of support however I’m really looking forward to studying at Cambridge.”
Michael Holliday (aged 18)
“Michael has worked incredibly hard for his A Levels and has achieved a brilliant A* in Maths, A in Further Maths and A in Physics. Well done Michael.”
Michael commented, “I was really nervous awaiting my exam results but I’ve worked hard so I was hoping it would be reflected in my grades. I have a passion for science and I’m going on to study Physics at Sheffield University with a view to potentially having a career in scientific research. I’ve enjoyed my time at Hessle High and Sixth Form but I’m now looking forward to University.”
Nathan Griffin (aged 18)
Grinning from ear to ear, Nathan Griffin was ecstatic to find out he’d achieved an A in History, A* in Law and A in PE, “I can’t believe it, I wasn’t expecting to get the grades I have. I put a lot of work and effort in and it means I’ve got into my first choice of University so I’ll be going to Newcastle to study a Law degree. The teachers have been really helpful and I’d especially like to thank Miss Horrobin who helped me with History.”
Georgia Penny (aged 18)
Georgia Penny who achieved three Distinction Stars and one Distinction in Biology, Health and Social studies and Business Studies commented, “I’m over the moon. I thought I’d get Distinctions but certainly wasn’t expecting Distinction stars. I’ve got a place at the University of Hull on a Social Work degree. I’ll miss Hessle Sixth From as the teachers have been really supportive and encouraging however I can’t wait to start University in September.”
Alex Fish (aged 18)
Alex Fish attained an A* in Maths, A in Chemistry and A in Physics. Looking thrilled with his results he commented, “I’m so pleased, with these results I’m going on to study Physics at Manchester University. I will miss Hessle Sixth Form, the teaching has been very good and the teachers give you all the support you need, I’d like to say thank you to them.”
George Humble (aged 16)
George Humble achieved 3As and a B in his AS Level Geography, Maths, Chemistry and Biology.
“I did better than expected”, commented George, “I’ve been working hard so I hoped I’d get the grades. Although these don’t count towards my grades next year they are a good indication as to what I need to do to achieve the grades I want. I’m really looking forward to my second year in the Sixth Form. We’ll have the new facilities and the teachers continue to be really supportive so it should be a good year.”
Argyle Bird (aged 16)
Argyle has had to overcome many challenges due to his disabilities however in his AS Levels he achieved 3 straight As in History, Classical Civilisation and Religious Studies.
Argyle said, “Since I achieved good GCSE results I’ve just been applying the same formula to my A Levels and working as hard as I can to do well. My results today have shown me that my formula is working so I just need to continue what I’m doing to achieve the grades I want next year. I’m really enjoying the Sixth Form. The teachers are really supportive.’
