On Saturday 10th September 2016, after years of planning and construction, Hessle High School & Sixth Form College’s new £18.6m flagship building was officially opened in front of students, staff, parents and guests from the local community.

The Hessle Academy's official opening comes after the new-look Sixth Form College opened its doors to students for the first time this term. The School’s flagship new main building opened in January.

It marks a new era for Hessle High School & Sixth Form College, which previously had separate sites for lower and upper school pupils. Executive Headteacher Sarah Young said: "We are excited to be officially opening our new school building and Hessle Sixth Form College building to our local community.

"The main school building has been open since January and our students have really benefited from their modern facilities with some outstanding examination results this summer, maintaining our consistent improvement over the last five years."

The school's Tranby House which is a listed building has been transformed into a dedicated Sixth Form Centre which houses University style lecture rooms, a recreational area with its own cafe and a well equipped area for quiet study.

Mrs Young said: "Whilst we still have a little finishing off to do to in the vast landscaped grounds of our beautiful historic school site our contemporary Sixth Form College building opened its doors to students for the first time this week."

Students were given a lead role in the official opening ceremony at the flagship academy.

Mrs Young said: "Community buildings are often opened by adults who are famous for one reason or another but at Hessle High School & Sixth Form College our school has been officially opened by those it was built for - our fantastic students!

"We are proud to be a community school successfully serving families in the Hessle community and surrounding area for many years and this building will ensure we can continue to do so for many years to come.

"Our student VIP guests have been selected from 31 students who were nominated by their teachers as embodying all that Hessle High School & Sixth Form College stands for in their attitude to learning to all aspects of school life."
