Friday 5 June 2020 - Headteacher's Update
As I have flagged up several times this week, we are writing to many of you this weekend with details of our wider re-opening for affected year groups. For those not affected by this, home learning will continue until the end of term. If you have any questions or queries about this please contact the school. The full update can be found here.

Thursday 4 June 2020 - Headteacher's Update
I have just left a 'virtual' meeting in which we have signed off the Wider Reopening plan. Anyone who has a child in the affected year groups will receive a letter in the next few days outlining our plan. Please read this carefully. Whilst putting this plan together, I have been awed by the dedication and commitment of our staff. There are over two hundred people working in our Academy and they have all been absolutely terrific during this lockdown. Now, more than ever, they have put their hands up and simply said 'what can I do to help?' They know how difficult this has been for our children and for yourselves and they now want to do whatever they can to help. The full update can be found here.
Wednesday 3 June 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Many thanks to those parents who have informed us of their up-to-date intentions with regards to sending their child back to school. We are currently working on those adjustments and fine-tuning our planning. I can confirm that places in all of the affected year groups have now been allocated and a waiting list will be put in place for anyone wishing to change their mind or whose key worker situation changes. We will be writing to all parents who have requested a place on Friday and will notify you by text message that this letter has gone out. Many thanks for your patience and quick responses to our calls and messages. The full update can be found here.
Monday 1 June 2020 - Headteacher's Update
As we gear up to welcoming more children back to school from the 15 June, much of today has been spent checking the site and preparing classrooms and playgrounds. We will write to parents of children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 6, Year 10 and Year 12 later this week with detailed plans for how we intend to welcome back your child from 15 June but the measures we have in place. The full update can be found here.
Friday 29 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
I write to you with further information regarding the wider reopening of schools to more children. While the Government have reaffirmed their desire for schools to reopen from Monday 1 June, they have also made it clear that this should be a phased return and the precise details are to be decided by the Headteacher of individual schools. The full update can be found here.
Friday 22 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
I hope this email finds you well. Today you will receive a letter from our Trust Chief Executive clarifying the position of the schools in our Trust, including Hessle High School and Sixth Form College and Penshurst Primary School. This states that there will be no return of children, other than those of key workers, until at least the 8 June. I hope to be able to write to you by 1 June with more detailed plans for the return to school for each year group, once the Government has made their next analysis of the national situation on 28 May. The full update can be found here.

Thursday 21 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
As you will have read in the press, the Local Authority has strongly advised that schools do not open for more than just key worker children from 1 June. As many parents begin to return to work in key industries, the demand for places in school has increased. In order for us to plan provision effectively and safely, please give us as much notice as possible if you believe that your child is eligible to return to school. The full update can be found here.
Wednesday 20 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Today is National 'Thank a Teacher' Day and we have been overwhelmed by the number of parents, carers and children who have taken the time to contact the school and individual teachers to express their gratitude for the work that they do. 'Work' is probably the wrong word. People do not choose to teach, or to work with young people in schools, simply because it is 'work'. There are easier ways in which to earn a living, believe me, but there is nothing more rewarding than working in schools with young people. We do it because we love it but, like anyone, it is really great when someone says 'thank you'. So, thank you for doing that. The full update can be found here.
Tuesday 19 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Thank you to all of those that have either completed the 'Return to School' surveys or provided your response to our admin staff when they have called you. With this information, we will now start to prepare detailed plans. The full update can be found here.
Monday 18 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Many thanks to all of you that have completed the 'Return to School' Surveys. These have been sent to parents of children in our Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 6, Year 10 and Year 12. In line with the Government's ambition for schools to open more widely, these are the cohorts of pupils and students that will be our priority in the first instance. The full update can be found here.
Friday 15 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Having spent much of this week in discussions following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Sunday 10 May, I am now able to provide you with some further information about how we will welcome your children back to school. The full update can be found here.
One of my sincere hopes is that this crisis leaves a legacy of which we can all be proud in terms of how our communities and neighbourhoods have come together to help those in need, and to show their appreciation for key workers. The full update can be found here.

Thursday 14 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Tomorrow we will be sending a short survey to the parents of children in nursery, reception, Year 1, Year 6, Year 10 and Year 12. This will ask whether it is your intention to send your child back to school when we are ready to welcome them, based on the Government's decision. Please respond as soon as possible as this will help us to organise the school in such a way that is as safe as possible. The full update can be found here.

Wednesday 13 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
It has been a quieter day today with fewer guidance documents flying out of the Department for Education which has given us time to digest them and to reflect. The full update can be found here.
Tuesday 12 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
We continue to digest the Government statement regarding children returning to school and to make plans for that to happen. There are still more questions than answers and, once we obtain more information about how we can reopen safely, I will begin to communicate our plans to you. The full update can be found here.
Monday 11 May 2020 - Headteachers Response to the Prime Minister's Statement.
I’m sure like me, many of you will have watched the Prime Minister’s address to the nation yesterday evening. You will have heard the Prime Minister indicating that the Government believes it may be in a position to implement a phased re-opening of schools from 1 June, starting with pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. The return of any students to secondary school is unlikely to occur until later and may begin with students in Year 10 and Year 12. The full update can be found here.
Thursday 7 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
If we have learned anything from the past seven weeks, it is how difficult it is for us to cope with our loss of freedoms. The freedoms to socialise, to go to work, to leave our homes. I am sure we have reflected on these losses and considered how much we take them for granted. While it is reassuring that everyone is constrained by the same rules, the impact of the current lockdown does not affect everyone equally. I do not need to spell these out but I want you to know that I, and all of the staff and Governors at the Hessle Academy, are acutely aware that many of you will be finding this current situation extremely difficult. You can always contact us. We may not be able to help directly but we will put you in contact with someone who can. The full update can be found here.

Wednesday 6 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
As businesses begin to re-open and employees start to return to work, we anticipate a greater demand for places in school. Currently, we are able to keep both sites open with minimal staffing ensuring that the children are safe and healthy. If you feel that your child is eligible to come to school because your employment is deemed to be that of a key worker, please read the following guidance carefully before contacting the school. The full update can be found here.
Tuesday 5 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Since schools closed in March, there has been an unprecedented effort to bring learning opportunities online. At Hessle and Penshurst, we have tried to do our bit by scheduling daily lessons and activities but, with a few clicks of a mouse or swipes of an iPad, there is a world of learning available to anyone with a curious mind. The full update can be found here.

Monday 4 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
I hope that this email finds you well as we went into the fifth week of school closure and home learning. We are promised a significant announcement from the Government at the weekend which may include an update on a possible schedule for children returning to school. As you would expect, we will study this announcement closely and I will write to you shortly afterwards with information on what this means for you and your child. The full update can be found here.
Friday 1 May 2020 - Headteacher's Update
It was when my five year old asked me to help her with her digraphs at the same time as my nine year old needed help with photosynthesis that I realised home schooling was going to be a challenge. If that sounds familiar to you, then you have probably spent some time on Google preparing for your own child's 'lesson'. And it seems everyone is in the same situation as this BBC article illustrates ... The full update can be found here.
Thursday 30 April 2020 - Headteacher's Update
In addition to setting work remotely and keeping in touch with our learners, many of our staff have found more ways to contribute to the collective national effort against the coronavirus. A number of them have volunteered to be part of the NHS community work, delivering groceries, running errands and calling in on more vulnerable members of our society. How they find the time to do this amazes me but we are very proud of them. The full update can be found here.

Wednesday 29 April 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Within our schools, this week has a really pivotal feel to it with perhaps more of our time now being spent on planning for the future and the return of children to school that we are all eager to see. The full update can be found here.
Tuesday 28 April 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Tomorrow we will be contacting all of our High School students again. We know that our teachers are in regular contact with the students through Google Classroom, helping them and commenting on their work. But, we felt it was important to write to them with more general information and reassurance in a way that is appropriate to their year group. Some of them may be worried about GCSE grading, option choices, sixth form information or even next year's GCSE exams. We don't have answers to all of their questions - who does? - but we want them to know that we are asking, and planning, and that we will be in touch with them just as soon as we can. It is now five and a half weeks since we closed our school and the length of time does not make things easier. For that reason, our messages include contact details for our pastoral staff and our school nurse. We hope they know who to contact if they need any help at all. The full update can be found here.
Monday 27 April 2020 - Headteacher's Update
Today we have had around thirty children in school across our primary and secondary sites. These are predominantly the children of key workers and this brings to over 500, the number of key worker shifts that have been made possible because of the commitment of our staff to keeping our school open. We are very proud to do what we can to help. The full update can be found here.
Friday 24 April 2020 - Headteacher's Update

I hope that this message finds you all well and that your children are back 'into the swing' of learning from home. While we continue to set work for each day, there are a vast range of resources available through other sources for those students that wish to do more work. The BBC have produced a programme of daily lessons covering all year groups and most subjects. Our first impressions are that these are very good indeed and offer a variety of learning activities. The full update can be found here.

Welcome to the summer term and I hope that you and your family have stayed safe over the Easter period. I am sure, like me, you will have had your plans thwarted by the lockdown, but at least nature has come to the rescue and given us some lovely weather with which to enjoy this most beautiful time of the year. The full update can be found here.
Tuesday 14 April 2020 - Headteacher's Update
It feels like a long time since I last wrote to you with an update on what has been going on in school.
The truth is …… very little! While we have remained open for students of key workers, the number of
students on both school sites has been low. The full update can be found here

If your child has not yet completed this, please encourage them to do so in order that we can continue to support them, and you. The full update can be found here

Firstly, thank you to those key-workers for your cooperation in only sending your child to school if it was absolutely essential. We have managed to maintain provision for those small numbers of children while observing sensible social distancing and with a very small number of staff in school. I hope that this provision has helped in some small way to supporting you in the vital and incredible work you are doing for your community. School will continue to open for you over Easter and if you need your child to attend school, please contact us. The full update can be found here
